Beware of collisions between vehicles and wild animals!

V-Traffic introduces the first innovative system to reduce the risk of accidents on the road.

V-Traffic, specialist of real-time traffic information, is also involved in road traffic accident prevention. In addition to a specific service developed for reindeer, and with the constant desire to deliver flexible and reliable traffic information at every moment, the brand has developed the intelligent "Elk warning" system, already available in selected models of some well-known car manufacturers.

Integrated into portable GPS or embedded systems, the V-Traffic service receives real time information such as geolocalized data from hunters, and allows drivers to be notified of animals crossing that cause fatal accidents each year.

The Nordic countries ... Roads and wide spaces do not always rhyme with quiet driving.

The elk, the king of great wild animal, is common in the Nordic countries. Its presence on the roads is the third cause of accidents after the weather and driving in Finland.

In 2013, 1,517 accidents were identified with material damage amounting to € 53 million. With male elk weighing over 800 kilograms, when collisions do occur they cause serious damage and injury to the participants.

Another example is that in Sweden, 7,000 elk-related accidents have been reported in 2010.

With thousands of accidents every year, between 20 and 50 human deaths and 900 people seriously injured, Nordic roads are known to be the sad scene of many wildlife accidents... until now.

To fight this scourge and reduce accidents that endanger the lives of motorists as much as animals, solutions have been put in place to prevent drivers, like the "Elk warning" V-Traffic system.

The intelligent "Elk warning" system was launched in Finland in the autumn of 2016. The service is already available in Audi, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo vehicles, as well as Garmin navigation systems.

Did you know?

With a small population and vast wild spaces the Finnish hunters use geolocalized datasets, to identify the presence of animals and indicate their hunting territory.

During hunting, the data collected from the hunter’s mobile phone provides real-time reporting about the area used by the Elk, their location and direction of travel.

A vital source of information that helps reduce the risk of collisions between elk and motorists ... because theV-Traffic solution informs you of the potential locations for elk crossings!

Numerous data are integrated into the "Elk warning" system:

  • Accidents with elk over the past 5 years are listed in a database.
  • Algorithms are developed by matching accident data and animal behavior.
  • A reindeer, for example, will tend to stay on the road, while an elk crosses it in the majority of cases.
  • The history of the GPS positions reported by the hunters and recovered from GPS modules located in the collars of the hunting dogs.

And additional data is being integrated:

  • The exact position of the accidents in real time thanks to the smartphone applications of the hunters.
  • The current position of hunters via their GPS devices and hunting dogs.
  • Data during hunting periods slightly deferred (for registered users).

Reduced risk of accidents

Available in TMC and Connected, its principle is simple: a system of alerts available 7 days a week and 24 hours a day makes it possible to warn drivers of the risks of collisions with all types of wild animals. By reducing the speed on notification, the driver can more easily anticipate the arrival of an elk in front of his vehicle.

With this smart system, V-Traffic demonstrates its commitment to significantly reduce the number of road accidents and ensure the safety of drivers by delivering targeted and reliable traffic information in real time.

As a pan-European player, V-Traffic is working with local players to provide country-specific and specific information.

Ex: In Finland, between 60% and 65% of elk-related accidents occur during sunrises and sunsets. During these periods, alerts are regularly sent out.

Kangaroos, cows, bears, monkeys ... every country its danger!

Yet this phenomenon goes well beyond Finland!

Even when road signs are installed the driver is easily lulled into a false sense of security, especially on routine journeys. A real time warning on the GPS helps to raise driver vigilance as well as increase their confidence in vehicle technology.

In France, for example, this road hazard accounts for 30,000 to 40,000 accidents each year *.
According to road safety organizations, wild boars are at the top of list of animals at risk (36%) followed by roe (17%) and hart (8%).

What if the French hunters used modern tools to monitor their hunting in real time?  The V-Traffic service could be deployed in France and increase road safety for everyone.

Elk, reindeer, deer, bear, wild boar ... "Elk Warning" from V-Traffic ensures safer roads with traffic information adapted to all situations and needs.
